A shortage claim occurs when Amazon receives a shipment and claims you shipped fewer units than what appears on your invoice or Advanced Ship Notice (ASN). Amazon then deducts the cost of the "missing" inventory from your payment. Shortage claims are usually the most common and frustrating deductions for Amazon vendors, because they are often driven by Amazon errors.
Common Drivers of Shortage Claim Errors
- Receiving errors: Amazon receives part of your shipment against the wrong PO or another vendor's PO
- Misplaced inventory: Your units were received but sent to the wrong FC or lost in Amazon's network
- Commingled inventory issues: In commingled scenarios, Amazon may deduct you for another vendor's shortage
- Case vs. outer vs. inner vs. each: Amazon received inners as eaches, or some other unit mismatch
Because many shortages are driven by Amazon's own errors, it's common for Amazon to reverse their own shortage claims within 60 days. If they find part of a missing order, you may see Amazon reverse a claim and immediately issue another claim for a smaller amount. After the 60-day settlement period, the key to winning disputes is with documentation that you shipped what you invoiced, and Amazon's receiving process created the discrepancy.

What Are Amazon Vendor Chargebacks?
Amazon vendor chargebacks are fees Amazon deducts from your payments when you fail to meet their operational, labeling, or compliance requirements. Unlike shortage claims (which dispute inventory discrepancies), chargebacks are penalties for non-compliance. The majority of chargebacks are legitimate, making it critical to identify trends by product and chargeback type.
Chargebacks typically range from $25-100 per violation, but can quickly add up if you're not tracking patterns and root causes. Brands with large catalogs and frequent shipments to Amazon FCs should pay close attention to chargebacks even if the individual financial amounts seem ignorable.

Coop Deduction Auditing
Verify Amazon's marketing fund deductions match what you actually agreed to pay
What Are Amazon Vendor Coop Deductions?
Coop (cooperative advertising) deductions are marketing funds that Amazon deducts from your payments to cover everything from operational costs (e.g. freight and damage) topromotional activities (e.g. Lightning Deals, Best Deals) and other vendor-funded programs. These deductions are typically negotiated as part of your vendor terms or agreed upon when you enroll products in specific promotional programs. Common coop deductions include:
Base Accrual
Amazon "standard terms," typically starting at 10% of COGS, though actual rates vary by category.
Damage Allowance
Negotiated deduction for customer returns, transit damage, and other unsellable sources.
Freight Allowance
Compensation for Amazon's wepay (collect) freight program, in lieu of your own outbound freight costs.
Merchandising Accrual
A "bank account" of funds that can be used for category and event merchandising programs.
AVS and SVS
Accruals or straight payments that fund Amazon Vendor Services (AVS).
Marketing Development Funds (MDF)
Negotiated allowances for Amazon's marketing campaigns featuring your brand or products.
Promotional Allowances
Agreed-upon percentages or flat fees for seasonal promotions, Prime Day, or other Amazon events.
Deal Funding
Placement fees and other costs associated with Lightning Deals, Best Deals, etc.
Coupons
When you create coupons, Amazon deducts the coupon value (e.g., $5 off per unit sold) plus a redemption fee.
Subscribe and Save
Discounts offered to Subscribe & Save customers (typically 5-15%) are deducted from your payment.
How to Audit Coop Effectively:
The most expensive coop errors occur when your products are enrolled in multiple versions of the same agreement type. For example, your VM may have accidentally set your new Coop Accrual agreement to start before the old one expires, and you get charged double for the overlapping time. If you sell in multiple categories, you probably have different coop agreements for each category: an ASIN might be mistakenly enrolled in agreements for more than one category at a time.
Spotting these errors takes a major investment in data gathering and preparation, because Amazon's interfaces make the errors almost impossible to spot. By downloading or extracting all of your remittance data, line-item deductions, and coop backup data, you can start adding up your coop deductions by product and time period to look for anomalies.
